Subject of decision | To introduce a re-rating inspection within 3 months of an inspection of a food to re-assess their food hygiene standards and to charge a fee of £150 for this re-inspection. |
Text of decision | The re-rating inspection would be additional to the statutory delivery of the food law enforcement service. Under the current procedure a food business has to wait between 3 and 6 months to receive a re-rating inspection, in accordance with the national “Brand Standard†Guidance. The proposed scheme would allow a businesses to request a re-rating within 3 months of their inspection and a fee of 3150 would be charged to cover the cost of this re-inspection. Currently 8 requests for re-inspection are received each year. |
Reason for decision | There are staffing resource implications associated with carrying out additional re-ratings of food businesses. These visits are non-statutory and it is proposed introduction of the fee of £150 will recover the cost of the re-inspection. The introduction of a fee will also ensure that the expectation of finding good food hygiene standards at the time of inspection are not undermined by the ability to request a re-rating. In businesses where the food hygiene standards have been found to be very poor it will encourage improved standards quickly. The proposed change will bring Middlesbrough’s procedures in line with the Tees Valley Councils who have already introduced charging for early re-rating assessments. The charge being levied by Redcar & Cleveland, Hartlepool, Stockton and Darlington Council’s is £150. |
