PGDs provide a legal framework that allows certain registered health care providers to supply and / or administer specified medicines to a pre-defined group of patients without them having to see a prescriber such as a doctor or nurse prescriber. Local Authorities are an authorising body for PGDs .

Reasons for the decision:

The implementation of the PGD will help The local Authority to:
1) Deliver Patient care that is appropriate in Smoking Cessation without compromising patient safety
2) Offer a significant advantage to patient care by improving access to
appropriate medication.
3) Provide equity in availability and quality of service provision.
4) Provide a safe , legal framework to protect patients
5) Reduce delays in treatment access
