Rodent levels in Middlesbrough Boroughs

We the undersigned petition the council to do the following: To address the growing rat population in Middlesbrough boroughs, and to put in place pest control and prevention methods to cull the rats and to prevent the population re-establishing in both urban and suburban areas.

There is a growing infestation of rats in not just the town centre, but in borough such as North Ormesby, Berwick Hills, Park End, and Thorntree to name a few. Without a coordinated efforts by pest control professionals, residents cannot hope to successfully remove rats from their properties and prevent their return. This issue was highlighted in 2025 by the discovery of a specimen the size of a housecat found in North Ormesby, this discovery became national news.

Without a commitment and action from the council to tackle the issue, residents are stuck spending money they do not have to spare culling a small number of rodents, only for more to later nest and breed due to the size of the rodent population.
